There is probably not a more controversial issue in the criminal-justice system than the death penalty. According to the Death Penalty Information Center, as of 2020 twenty-eight states and the federal government have death-penalty statutes. According to a Gallup poll conducted in May 2020, a record-low 54% of Americans consider the death penalty to be morally acceptable, marking a 6%-point decrease from last year.

In addition, 40% of Americans think the death penalty is morally wrong, the highest in Gallup’s twenty-year trend. One of the reasons Americans are against the death penalty is because of the chance that the person was wrongly convicted.
