ESSAY: Due Friday of finals week (June 11th) at 11:59 PM Pacific Time. For your final, you will develop your midterm project proposal and write an academic paper following the MLA citation format. The paper length is about 1500-2500 words.
Your final essay should be between 1500-2500 words, double-spaced, and follow MLA format. In the upper left-hand corner of the first page, list your name, Professor, TA, DESMA 9: Art, Science & Technology, and the date.
Your paper should include at least 10 direct TEXT references (with in-text MLA citations) and 20 total text citations in your bibliography. These must be text references, not images.
Your paper should also include a minimum of 3 images and no more than 10 images, no larger than ½ page. These images should include a caption directly underneath the image and a proper MLA image citation in a “figures” citation page (separate from your bibliography). You can create your own illustrations or search for images online. See the Image Resources

It is OK to reference movies and books but you are still required to talk about the artists related to the innovation you are writing about. Each weekly class topic has artists already referenced so it is a good idea to review that week’s lesson. You are encouraged to reference events or talks you attended, blogged about – if they relate directly to the subject you are writing about.
***If you want to develop a new project and move away from what you submitted for the midterm, you need to consult with their TAs as soon as possible before you submit it. If you choose to not write about your midterm, you will write an essay that connects art, science, and technology.
Pick one topic from the 9 we covered, choose a scientific innovation and connect to an artist who is inspired and/or works with the same subject. Mention the technology that drives both art & science in your essay. The same citation/grading rubric applies to this option.***
Elements of your essay: Your paper should include the following aspects. This is not a strict guideline, but a reminder that your paper should mention each of these elements. Feel free to include other elements, such as a title page, abstract, literature review,
Introduction: Introduce your (midterm) project proposal/topic.
Explain why you find the subject you chose interesting and what you have learned in the process. Is it related to your major and/or to what you are engaged in extra-curricular, ie. sports, movies, games, art?
Background/Context/Precedents: list historical references / current relevant literature / projects / overall context of your topic
Proposal and/or Current state: Develop your midterm proposal and/or describe what is the current state of technology / science and relate to an artist inspired by this innovation.
Conclusion/Project into the future: How do you imagine this science / technology to develop into the future – what seems impossible today.
