Project Overview
For this project, you will focus on evaluating literature from a traditionally underrepresented group in children’s and young adult literature. You will read at least 3-4 picturebooks or novels which are each written by a different “insider” or #OwnVoices author from the cultural group upon which you focus. These should be books that I believe fit criteria for exemplary literature and contain “authentic” representations of the population.

Along with the books I have selected to read for project, you are also required to collect and read at least one critical review or scholarly piece about one of the books I chose. The purpose of this part of the assignment is to show that you not only know how to select quality diverse literature, but that you also know how to find outside sources that support your selection. Therefore, it is important that you pay close attention to who wrote the review, where it is from, and whether the review is “critical” in nature.

For example, a review on Amazon.com submitted by an unknown person does not qualify as a critical or scholarly review. While there are a number of potential resources, you can always look to children’s literature journals (like Horn Book Magazine, The Journal of Children’s Literature, Kirkus Reviews) and scholarly/professional blogs/websites for reviews. Since reviews of this type are sometimes difficult to find, here are a couple links to help get you started:

Horn Book Magazine
Journal of Children’s Literature
Kirkus Reviews
School Library Journal
The product that will result from your work on this project will be a 1- to 3-page handout. Therefore, you should take care to design the handout so that it is informative and easy to read.

Your handout must include an overview of the texts I selected, focusing on the themes or variations among the books, as well as individual critical annotations of each of the texts you selected, and an annotated entry for the critical review u located and read about one of the books included on my list.

Theses are the list of selected books:
The breadwinner by Deborah Ellis
Shooting Kabul by N.H. Senzai
Women in the Middle East by Ramsay M. Harik, Elsa Marston
Malala: My Story of Standing Up for Girls’Rights by Sarah J Robins

Remember, your handout is brief (1-3 pages) and should include the following:
an overview of my books as a set
an annotated bibliography of the texts you read, using APA style citations
an annotated entry for the critical piece you located (focused on ONE of the books you chose), using an APA style citation
