Swamped with your writing assignments? Take the weight off your shoulder!
The purpose of this assignment is to develop a strong, working foundation for your research paper. This week, you will identify a topic related to one of the following topics we will cover in class:
The legacy of racism
Your topic proposal should include the following items and address the following questions. (The italicized text below shows examples of each required item.)
1. Identify the topic area you wish to pursue.
You may begin by thinking broad (for example, the legacy of racism in America).
2. Explain two reasons why you are interested in this topic and state your goal.
What fascinates you or draws you to this topic?
What is your intended goal?
To evoke change?
To make connections (show cause and effect)?
To introduce a new theory, solution, or idea?
3. Draft a thesis statement. (Narrow your topic and define your goal.)
Ask questions to identify a problem or an idea related to your topic and to help you narrow it down. For example:
What does the legacy of racism look like in the United States today?
How do we eliminate racism and violence against Black communities?
What is the Black Lives Matter campaign? Can it help?
Continue to think about your topic and consider your goal to create a one- or two- sentence thesis.
Example Thesis: The Black Lives Matter campaign is essential today because the legacy of racism in the United States persists and is well documented by state and vigilante violence inflicted on Black communities. The Black Lives Matter campaign can help destroy this legacy.
Your topic proposal should be approximately one page. Follow APA formatting. Review the rubric for more grading information.
