1. Write an essay answering one of the following questions using the sources provided. (If you
wish you can use additional sources, but you must use the sources listed with the question.) Use
a style with footnotes or endnotes (e.g. Chicago), not in-text citations. (If you have never used
footnotes before there is a guide on Brightspace as well as examples below).
2. Prepare a bibliography of suitable readings relating to your chosen question (including 6
sources in addition to the readings available on Brightspace).

What did democracy mean for the women of Athens in the 5th century BCE?
Length: At least 1200 words but no more than 2000 words
Sources and Bibliography: The first task is to locate and select the readings you will use. A
selection of primary sources (from the time period) and secondary sources (written by
historians) are available on Brightspace. However, part of the exercise is to identify further
readings and prepare a scholarly bibliography with at least 6 readings in addition to the ones
supplied, even if you do not use them in your essay.
Presentation: Your essay should be word-processed, double-spaced, with generous margins.
