Choose one work of art from the attached list and write a 3-page analysis of its formal aspects, using standard formatting (12 pt. Times New Roman font, double-spaced, one-inch margins).
Review the terms discussed in the “Fundamentals of Visual Analysis” handout before you head to the galleries. You may wish to bring a copy of the handout to the gallery to help you distinguish the different features of the paintings. This, in turn, will help you take better notes.
At the SU Art Galleries, spend some time looking at each of the works listed below. Once you have settled on a single work, observe it carefully and analyze what you see. Take notes, and keep in mind that your analysis must go beyond mere description—it should try to explain the effect or purpose of the work’s visual form.
Your task is to shape your analysis around a thesis statement. As you look at your chosen artwork, you might notice that your attention returns to a few features again and again. Take one of these main features and reexamine your notes with a provisional thesis in mind. Does it help organize your observations? If not, try taking another point of view. When you write, use your thesis to guide your discussion and support your claims with visual evidence from the work itself.
This exercise is intended to improve your skills in visual analysis, so no research is necessary, but the text you submit should be a polished one. You will be evaluated on the precision and clarity of your language.

• Reflection (5 MIN)
Assessment:
Assessment:
(Come up with questions that will help you to assess the success of the class. Examples: Were students able to follow instructions? Were they able to understand and physicalize the concepts of the class? Were they able to explore creatively?)
EXTRA CREDIT:

Interdisciplinary Connections:
(Choose two other subjects, ie Visual Art, Math, Music, or any other subject that seems applicable, and describe an activity that could be done connecting this dance lesson to that subject. This is in addition to your reflection. This doesn’t need to be a fleshed out lesson plan, but just an idea of how a teacher could connect this lesson to another subject if she/he wanted to.)

Extensions:
(Give an idea for how this lesson could be expanded into a larger unit plan. Again, you don’t need to outline the whole unit plan; just give an idea for how, if a teacher were to want to, this dance lesson could be further developed.)
