Assignment 7: Sexual Tolerance: The Times They Are A’changing People in the Unit

Assignment 7: Sexual Tolerance: The Times They Are A’changing
People in the United States vary widely in their acceptance of the sexual and gender choices and orientations. The impact of those with views of lesser acceptance is felt the hardest by the most vulnerable among us- our children.
Watch the following video of a Ft. Worth City Councilman speaking about his experiences as a young man marginalized based on his sexual orientation and consider the impact such a message would have on a young person in a similar situation and on an adult who is intolerant of the LGBTQ community.
· Joel Burns: It Gets Better https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ax96cghOnY4 (transcriipt located on YouTube site)

Compare and contrast what the experiences of these two individuals (the insecure LGBTQ youth and the intolerant adult) viewing this message would be. How might it reinforce existing beliefs about themselves or motivate them to see themselves and/or the world differently? What additional information would you propose to share with either or both of these individuals to persuade them into such a paradigm shift?
Write a 5-paragraph essay that includes each of the elements listed below in the grading rubric. Be sure to use at least 2 references to support all opinions you express in this essay. Your paper must meet the minimum 750-word count requirements AND use the 5 paragraph structure.

All assignments and forums in the class are designed for you to demonstrate your understanding and your knowledge of the material content. It is never acceptable or appropriate to simply provide information that is copied and pasted from a source – any source. It is also inappropriate to provide personal opinions without any credible, expert support. Even if the information were cited properly, copying and pasting does not demonstrate knowledge.

Assignment Details A 12-year-old boy was caught in the act of battering a 14-yea

Assignment Details
A 12-year-old boy was caught in the act of battering a 14-year-old female acquaintance by the victim’s 16-year-old brother. The brother arrived home, saw his sister on the floor, and observed the 12-year old boy standing over her with his fist raised in the air. The 16-year old brother observed that his sister was not moving. He also saw a shoe with a bloody heel near her on the floor. The victim was almost unconscious when the police arrived.
Following the incident, the juvenile was arrested and detained by local police on the following charges:
Battery of a minor
Aggravated battery with a weapon
Minor in possession of an alcoholic beverage
Unlawful possession of a controlled substance (marijuana)
The juvenile suspect was a latchkey kid (a child who returns from school to an empty home) from a single-parent home. His mother works from 2 p.m.–11 p.m. Monday through Friday, so the juvenile is often alone and unsupervised for several hours upon his return from school.
After a preliminary investigation, the juvenile suspect explained that the victim purchased the marijuana and the alcohol earlier that same day. The juvenile explained that the victim had invited him to her house because they had “been liking each other” for a long time. Further, the juvenile explained that the alcohol and drugs were in the home when he arrived. He said that he and the victim began by smoking marijuana and drinking beer before they began kissing and touching one another. Next, according to the juvenile suspect, they started to have what he described as consensual sex. After a short while, they were interrupted by the victim’s brother, who had come home from work. The victim’s brother then called the police to report the incident.
The juvenile had prior detentions for violation of curfew, truancy, and attempted sexual battery. No further explanations are given.
Write an essay, divided into 3 sections:
The perspective of the police officer
What typically happens to this juvenile before he goes to juvenile court? How does law enforcement process the incident?
The perspective of the state’s attorney
If you were the state’s attorney, what would you suggest to the court regarding how the boy should be punished, sentenced, rehabilitated, or any combination of these options?
The perspective of the judge
Based on the facts of the case and the procedures of the juvenile justice system, what would be the most appropriate finding of the court? What options does the judge have in this incident?
Make sure that your essay addresses the following:
Do each of these components of the criminal justice system see the offender as a status offender for any of the charges?
Discuss your opinion of the status offender from the perspective of each criminal justice component (law enforcement, state’s attorney, and the judge).
Are the charges viewed by each of the criminal justice components listed below as delinquent acts?
Be sure to cite all references in APA format.

Project: Final Evaluation Research Design
Note: Your Final Project is due to the Instructor by Day 1 of this week.
So far in this course, you have developed all of the parts of your Final Project and have analyzed the key points for each element for your Executive Summary.
Discuss your completed Final Project by reviewing and editing your Assignments to create a cohesive paper. Add an Introduction and Rationale for the study. Your Final Project should be 4–6 pages in length.
Note: This is not a “cut and paste exercise.” During the term, you have developed all of the groundwork for your Final Project, but now you must create a cohesive document. For example, although stakeholders may be mentioned, it would not be necessary—and could be unwise—to include all of the detail that may have been considered in the design phase. As another example, simply pasting in the logic model with no explanation would not prove enlightening for any reader who is unfamiliar with the logic model process.
Below, you will find an outline of topics that should be addressed in your Final Project. You are not required to exactly follow this outline; however, you must be certain that each component is clearly addressed in your final design.
Although your project for this course is only a design document and not a full report, you will find it useful to review your Learning Resources. Many of the same points and principles apply equally well at the research design stage.
Your Final Project will include the following elements:
• Problem definition and intervention descriiption
• Logic model or logframe
• Development of indicators
• Data collection strategy
• Evaluation design, needs assessment, or formative or summative impact evaluation
• Data analysis strategy
• Stakeholder requirements

Overview: The ability to conduct research using state corrections data is a valuable skill to have not only for this course but for further study in the criminal
justice field. It is also a valuable skill for practicing professionals.
Prompt: Many states are using alternatives to incarceration and are reconsidering policies in order to assist offenders making the transition back into the
community. Write a short paper in which you respond to these questions:
 What alternatives to incarceration exist in your state (Mississippi)?
 Are these alternatives merely enhancements to probation or parole, or are they truly alternatives?
 Which alternatives work best for which types of offenders?
 What are the elements necessary for successful reentry of offenders into the community?
 What is your state doing to address these elements? Explain how the state initiatives are intended to address each element.
Guidelines for Submission: Your submission should be about 1 to 2 pages, with double spacing, 12-point Times New Roman font, and one-inch margins. Sources
should be cited according to APA style.

Chapter 9 Identify other special populations of victims and what, if any, laws

Chapter 9
Identify other special populations of victims and what, if any, laws have been implemented on their behalf – local, state, or federal – as well as those listed in the text.
Determine victim/witness assistance programs in the state. Students can interview victims of crime known to them to determine if victims were informed of their rights and what, if any, rights and/or notifications were provided to them, and if they took advantage of the victims’ fund, and for what purposes.
While victims are provided a number of rights, notification and implementation are inconsistent, and where victims are kept informed, many victims do not take advantage of their rights, and there is no reduction in crime. Given this information and keeping in mind the resource crisis in the CJS, should victims’ rights programs and policies remain or be eliminated?
Chapter 10
Debate the supply v. demand debate of guns. Should there be an effort to limit the manufacturing of guns given the 97 million available? What is the students’ interpretation of the Second Amendment’s “right to bear arms” statement?
If bans on guns do not reduce serious crimes, what actions can be taken to improve the safety of society? contemplate accidental shootings and suicides by young people. Consideration should also be given to the rare occurrence of school/campus shootings, especially the 2010 governmental report on violence on college campuses which demonstrated a sharp increase in assaults and shootings on campuses in the past 20 years.

Not every statistical test is appropriate to use in every situation. It’s important to be able to determine when to apply certain statistical tests and what limitations to be aware of. Fortunately, many research studies include sections about the purpose and limitations of the study data and analysis. In this assignment, you will examine research in the criminal justice field that involves the use of statistical tests in order to better understand the applications and limitations of these tools.
Find an article in the University Library that involves the use of inferential statistical tests in analyzing criminal justice data. Follow the steps below to locate a full-text article in the library’s criminal justice database:
On the University Library home page, click on Research Databases.
In the alphabetical listing of databases, scroll to Criminal Justice Abstracts with Full Text and click to open it.
Click on Advanced Search.
In the first search field, add your research methodology (inferential statistics, ANOVA, or t-tests).
In the second search field, add a topic within criminal justice that interests you (e.g., police, crime, parole, drug trafficking). You may have to adjust your keyword to find an interesting article that you can use.
Read the article, paying special attention to the application and limitations of specific statistical tests used in the research.
Write an 875- to 1,050-word paper in which you do the following:
State what interested you about your selected article.
Summarize the article.
Identify the statistical test(s) used in the research.
Discuss the article’s analysis of the research question.
Compare the appropriateness of the procedures and results to the initial research question. Discuss any limitations of the statistical test(s). What did the researchers not learn from the tests that may be valuable to understand the research question?
Cite a minimum of 2 peer-reviewed sources.
Format your paper according to APA guidelines.
