The purpose of this exercise is to write about a feature or question that may be interesting from a
sociolinguistic point of view. Your observation can be based on any kind of language material –
your own experience, a conversation you overheard, an audio recording, a video, a TV show, a
newspaper, a novel, an email message… In a nutshell, anything you encounter in your everyday
life. You will write a short summary of this observation, answering the three questions below. You
should draw on what we have learned in the course this semester in order to make your
observation and to demonstrate your understanding of how it relates to the concepts, previous
research, and methodologies that we have encountered.

Note that we are describing language use, not judging it, so avoid prescriiptive value
judgements and stereotyping.

Your observations do not have to be about English – in fact, you are encouraged to share
observations on other languages (though this is not a requirement).

A number of suggested topics are listed below, but observations related to any aspect of the
course material or sociolinguistics more generally are welcome.

Part 1: This assignment is designed to provide you with an opportunity to find and generate APA style references about the assessment and treatment of voice and resonance disorders. Specifically, you are to develop an APA style bibliography of 5 research articles that focus on cause(s), assessment and/or behavioral treatment of voice and resonance disorders (behavioral treatment is the therapy that we apply). Two (2) articles should be related to the same topic, but the others can be unrelated.
You may want to begin by looking briefly in your text for information and key words you can search on-line. It may provide you with some ideas.
Start with the ASHA website, and look for the Evidence Map in Voice Disorders, which can be found in the ASHA Practice Portal (https://www.asha.org/Practice-Portal/Clinical-Topics/Voice-Disorders/ (Links to an external site.)). You can also look in the databases in the Library. I have found Science Direct and Academic Search Premier to be very helpful search engines, and The Journal of Voice is a very strong journal for articles on these topics. You will be able to find what you need using these 2 resources, but you may search elsewhere if you wish. I want you to get the experience of using these resources.
Once you found five, write the references for these articles in APA format. APA format is very specific and can be found on-line (The Purdue OWL, etc.). Ultimately, you are generating a bibliography of sources about voice and resonance disorders.
Submit your bibliography. The papers will be graded according to content, organization, and mechanics with particular attention to APA style.
Each of your references will be formatted like the one below (Note the level of detail, organization, capitalization, and punctuation). The bibliography should be alphabetized.
Smith, J. E. & Smith, J. C. (2016). The effects of yawn-sigh on vocal nodules. The
Journal of Voice Disorders, 12(3), 19-26.
Part 2 (Handed in separately)
For this assignment, you will select 2 of the articles from your bibliography (Research Assignment One). Then, summarize each one according to the following format:
APA reference at the top of the summary (written in the format in Assignment One)
Purpose of the study or article (1-2 sentences)
Participants and methods used in the study (1-2 paragraphs)*
Results of the study (1-2 paragraph)*
*If your article is not a formal research study, you can use 3-4 paragraphs to summarize the article’s content.
Each summary will be 1-2 pages, double-spaced. You do not need to cite the articles in the summaries, but they should be well written and organized. Your paper will be graded according to content, organization and mechanics (grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc.).
The papers will be graded according to content, organization, and mechanics with particular attention to APA style. If papers are passed in late, a penalty will be imposed.
